How Solar and Battery Backup Work Together (Sizing, Essentials vs. Whole Home)

Solar panels and a home battery each do something useful on their own. But the reason so many Southern Oregon homeowners install them together is that, as a pair, they solve a problem neither one fully solves alone: keeping your home powered through a utility outage, either due to fire season or inclement weather. Here’s how they actually work together.

What each part does

  • Solar panels generate electricity when the sun is up. On a normal day, they offset what you’d otherwise pull from Pacific Power.

  • A battery stores electricity so you can use it when you want, including when the grid is down.

On their own, each has a gap. A battery alone works during an outage, but its runtime is limited by how much it stores. Put them together and the gaps close.

The teamwork: how they carry you through an outage

During a multi-day power shutoff, solar and battery hand off to each other:

  • Daytime: your panels power the home and recharge the battery.

  • Nighttime: the battery powers the home from the energy it banked during the day.

  • Next morning: the sun comes up, the panels refill the battery, and the cycle repeats.

That daily recharge is the magic. A battery by itself might carry your essentials for a stretch and then run out. A battery being refilled by solar every day can keep going for as long as the outage lasts, which is exactly what you want when a PSPS, Public Safety Power Shutoff, drags on for days during the sunniest part of the year.

Sizing: essentials vs. whole home

Here’s where it gets practical. You don’t have to power everything to make solar-plus-battery worth it. You decide what needs to stay on, and we size the system to match. Typically there’s three common tiers for backup system sizing:

  • Essentials only: fridge/freezer, some lights, Wi-Fi, device charging, a medical device. A modest load a battery can carry a long time, and solar keeps refilling it.

  • Essentials plus the well pump: the same as above, plus running water for homes on a well. This has a bigger power draw, so it needs more capacity, which is often the real goal here.

  • Whole home backup: the house runs close to normal, AC and all. This needs the most battery capacity (sometimes more than one battery), and the tier where daily solar recharging matters most, because a bigger load needs a bigger daily top-up.

The right size is a balance of what you want to keep on, how much sun your roof gets, and how much storage you add. Get that balance right and an outage becomes something you barely notice.
