It’s called aPSPS, and it’s become a regular part of life in Southern Oregon. Here’s what it actually is and how to find out if your home is affected.

PSPS Defined

PSPS stands for Public Safety Power Shutoff. It’s a planned, deliberate outage. When fire-weather conditions turn dangerous with high winds, low humidity, and bone-dry vegetation. Pacific Power will proactively shut off electricity to certain areas so its power lines can’t spark a wildfire.

The key thing to understand: a PSPS is not a malfunction. Nothing broke. The utility turned the power off intentionally, because the alternative of a downed or arcing line igniting a hillside in September is by far worse. After the catastrophic wildfires our region has already lived through, this has become standard practice across fire-prone parts of the West.

Why the Rogue Valley is prime PSPS country

Our corner of Oregon checks every box that leads to a shutoff: hot, dry summers; steep, wooded terrain; wind events; and long stretches of extreme fire danger from mid-summer well into fall. That combination is exactly what pushes a utility to cut power preemptively.

And PSPS events aren’t the only way we lose power. The valley also goes dark the ordinary ways with winter storms, ice, and wind bringing down limbs, and equipment failures. A shutoff is just the most predictable of the bunch.

What a PSPS means for your household

That unpredictable duration is the hard part. Planning for a two-hour blip is easy. Planning for a possible three-day shutoff during the hottest week of the year with the food in your freezer, your well pump, and anyone on a medical device, all on the line, is a different matter.
