Your Solar Installer Went Out of Business. Here’s Exactly What to Do.
You called the number on your contract and got a disconnected line. Or you found a news article. Or your monitoring app went dark and nobody has returned your emails in three weeks. However you found out, the feeling is the same: you spent a lot of money on a system that is supposed to last 25 years, and the company that sold it to you has vanished.
Take a breath. I want to tell you the most important thing right up front, because almost nobody explains this to homeowners in your position.
Your solar panels did not stop being under warranty when your installer closed its doors. Most of the coverage on your equipment comes from the manufacturers who built it, not from the company that bolted it to your roof. That coverage is very likely still alive and still yours to claim. You have real options, and this is a fixable situation.
Let me walk you through exactly what happened, what you still have, and what to do next.
First, know that you are not alone
If it feels like the solar industry has been collapsing around you, that is not your imagination. More than 100 solar companies have filed for bankruptcy or shut down in recent years, including some of the biggest names in the business.
A quick rundown of the ones we hear about most from Rogue Valley homeowners:
Titan Solar Power ceased operations in June 2024 and filed Chapter 7 liquidation, leaving roughly 150,000 households across 16 states without a company to call.
SunPower filed in August 2024. In this case there was a soft landing. Complete Solar purchased key assets, took on the SunPower name, and has continued honoring existing warranties and service agreements.
Sunnova, one of the largest third-party owners of residential solar, filed Chapter 11 in June 2025, with operations moving to a servicer called SunStrong Management.
Freedom Forever, which was the top residential solar installer in the country, filed Chapter 11 in April 2026, and then Chapter 7 in August 2026.
Others, including Pink Energy and Vivint Solar, are gone as well. The point is not to pile on bad news. The point is that this is a widespread industry problem, not something you did wrong when you chose your installer, and an entire support path exists for homeowners in exactly your position.
The good news: most of your warranty coverage survived
Here is the part that changes everything, and it comes down to understanding that your system actually carries three separate warranties from two different sources.
Your product warranty comes from the manufacturer. This covers defects in the equipment itself. On premium residential panels, that is typically 25 years of coverage. On inverters and batteries, it is between 10-25 years depending on the manufacturer. It is a promise from the company that built the panels and equipment, so your installer going under does not change this.
Your performance warranty also comes from the manufacturer. This guarantees your panels will still produce a specified percentage of their rated output over time, commonly somewhere around 80 to 90 percent at year 25. Again, that is the manufacturer’s promise, not your installer’s.
Your workmanship warranty came from the installer. This is the one that covers the quality of the installation itself, things like roof penetrations, mounting, and wiring. Industry workmanship warranty terms run anywhere from 1 to 25 years, with 5-10 years being common. This is the coverage that genuinely dies with the company, and it is the real loss when an installer closes.
So the honest summary is this. You very likely still have manufacturer coverage on your panels and inverters. What you have lost is your installation coverage, your service relationship, and your point of contact. That is a real problem, but it is a much smaller problem than “my warranty is worthless,” which is what most homeowners fear. What to do right now: a step-by-step plan
Here is the order I would work through it if this were my house.
1. Find out what actually happened to the company
There is a meaningful difference between the types of closure. A Chapter 7 filing, like Titan’s, is a liquidation. The company is being wound down and there is no future entity to call. A Chapter 11 filing is a reorganization, and an acquisition means another company may have taken over the obligations. SunPower’s warranties, for example, continued under the new owner, and Sunnova’s contracts moved to SunStrong Management.
Search your installer’s name plus “bankruptcy” and see whether a successor company has been named. If one has, contact them first. You may still have a service path that transferred from one company to another.
2. Gather every document you have
Dig out your original contract, the system design or spec sheet, your equipment list with model and serial numbers, your permit paperwork, your interconnection agreement with Pacific Power, and any monitoring logins. If you financed the system, find the loan or lease documents too.
If you are missing pieces, do not panic. Your county permit records and your utility interconnection file can often reconstruct much of it, and a good local installer can identify your equipment on site.
3. Identify who actually made your equipment
This is the key that unlocks your remaining warranty. Walk out and look, or check your paperwork. Who made your panels? Who made your inverters or microinverters? Names like Enphase, Tesla, REC, Maxeon, SolarEdge, Qcells, and others are the parties that owe you warranty coverage if something goes wrong.
Your installer’s name on the contract is not who honors the equipment warranty. The manufacturer is.
4. Contact the manufacturers directly and register your claim
If you have issues with your system, you can Go straight to the manufacturer’s warranty or support page and open a case. Have your serial numbers, install date, and proof of purchase ready. Many manufacturers will honor a claim even when the original installer is gone, though most will require a qualified installer to perform the actual diagnosis and replacement work. That is where step six comes in.
5. If you have a lease or PPA, find your new servicer
If you do not own your system outright, your situation is a bit different. Lease and power purchase agreements are contracts that typically get transferred to a successor company rather than evaporating. SunPower and Sunnova contracts, for instance, both landed with SunStrong Management. Your payment obligation almost certainly survived, and so did the servicer’s obligation to maintain the system. Find out who holds your agreement now and get it in writing.
6. Get a local installer to do a system health check
This is the step that actually solves the problem. You need a licensed local company to become your ongoing service provider: someone who can inspect the system, diagnose what is wrong, handle manufacturer warranty claims on your behalf, and be there when something else comes up. Most manufacturers will need a technician on site that is certified with servicing and installing the equipment. So do your homework when you look for local installers and make sure they are actually certified to work on your system.
A good health check should confirm your production against what the system should be making, inspect the wiring, connections, and mounting, verify your monitoring is reporting correctly, identify any failed components, and document your equipment so you have a clean record going forward. Do not wait on this
I understand the temptation to leave it alone if the system still seems to be making power. Waiting is the expensive choice, for three reasons.
Manufacturer warranties have expiration dates, and the clock is running whether you file or not. Replacement parts for older inverters get harder and more expensive to source every year as models are discontinued. And small problems compound. A single failing microinverter, a loose connection, or a monitoring system that quietly stopped reporting can cost you months of lost production before you notice it on your power bill.
Addressing a small fault now is dramatically cheaper than discovering a year of underproduction later.
