Where to Install Solar Panels: Roof vs. Ground Mounts for Rogue Valley Properties
Not every home has a perfect south-facing roof with no trees and a brand-new surface. In fact, most don’t. So one of the most common questions I get from homeowners around the valley is some version of “my roof is shaded” or “my roof faces the wrong way” or “my roof is flat…can I even go solar?”
The answer is almost always yes, you have options, but the best spot for your panels depends on your specific property. Let me walk you through how to think about panel placement, from the ideal roof setup to ground mounts and everything in between, with the Rogue Valley’s particular quirks in mind.
The ideal spot, and why some roofs aren’t it
In a perfect world, your panels sit on a south-facing roof surface, tilted at a good angle, with no shade on them from sunrise to sunset. That setup captures the most sun over the course of a year.
Here’s the reassuring part. Your roof does not have to be perfect to make solar worthwhile. Panels have gotten more efficient, more affordable, and mounting is more flexible than it used to be, so plenty of “imperfect” roofs still produce great results. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s finding the placement on your property that gives you the most production for your dollar.
Direction and angle: what actually matters
Two things determine how much sun a given surface catches: which way it faces, and how steeply it’s tilted.
On direction, south is best in our hemisphere, but the drop-off for facing elsewhere is gentler than people fear. Panels anywhere from southeast to southwest stay within about 5 percent of ideal, so a slightly off-south roof is barely affected. Even due east or due west facing panels typically lose only around 15 percent of annual production compared to true south. That’s often still well worth doing and might only take a few more solar panels to make up not being true south. The one direction we genuinely try to avoid is north-facing, which still could be an option if you have multiple arrays, but doesn’t really make sense on its own.
On tilt, our latitude here in Southern Oregon means an angle somewhere in the low-to-mid 30s up to about 40 degrees tends to capture the most energy over the year. Most pitched roofs are already reasonably close to this range, so your existing roof slope usually works fine.
The takeaway is that direction and tilt matter, but they’re rarely dealbreakers. There’s one factor that matters much more, and it’s the one Rogue Valley homeowners run into most.
Shade is the real enemy here
If there’s a single thing that kills solar production in our area, it’s shade, and we have plenty of shade-makers. Tall conifers, mature oaks, neighboring hills, and the valley’s own terrain all cast shadows.
Shade matters more than most people realize because of how panels are wired. Depending on the system, shading even part of one panel can drag down the output of others connected to it. The good news is that modern equipment fights back. Microinverters and power optimizers, which operate each panel independently, dramatically reduce the loss that partial shade does, so a little morning shade from a neighbor’s tree doesn’t tank your whole array. When shading is a factor, and in the Rogue Valley it often is, panel-level electronics are usually the right call.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as trimming or removing a problem tree, which also happens to line up with wildfire defensible-space practices many of us are already thinking about here. And sometimes the honest answer is that the roof is just too shaded, and your panels belong somewhere else on the property entirely. That’s where ground mounts come in.
When your roof isn’t the answer: ground-mounted solar
A lot of Rogue Valley properties have something suburban lots don’t: land. If you’ve got open, sunny space on your acreage, a ground-mounted system can be a fantastic option, and often a better one than the roof.
Here’s why ground mounts are so appealing when you have the room. Because they’re not stuck with your roof’s direction or pitch, we can aim them at true south and set them at the perfect tilt, so a ground mount of the same size can produce meaningfully more energy than a compromised roof array, in some cases up to about 25 percent more. They’re also easy to reach for cleaning and maintenance, they don’t put any penetrations in your roof, they keep panels off a roof you may need to replace someday, and they’re simple to expand later if your needs grow.
The tradeoffs are real, though, and I won’t gloss over them. Ground mounts cost more, typically adding somewhere around 75 cents to a dollar per watt over a roof install, because they need their own foundation, framing, and trenching to run wiring back to the house. On a larger system that can mean several thousand dollars more. They also take up yard space and require open, unshaded land to make sense. For rural valley properties with the acreage to spare, that trade is often well worth it. For a tight in-town lot, the roof usually wins.
Other placements worth knowing about
Roof and ground aren’t your only two choices. Pole mounts raise an array up on a single post, which can lift panels above low shade or snow and even track the sun in some configurations. Solar carports and patio covers do double duty, shading your vehicles or your deck while generating power, which is a nice way to add solar without touching the house roof. On a property with the right layout, these can be the perfect fit. If you have an existing carport or shade cover be aware that there are limitations. The structure must have already been permitted with your city or county and we will have to work with a structural engineer to verify that the structure can handle the weight of the panels. This can sometimes disqualify the structure or add additional cost to the project.
What about a flat roof?
Flat roofs are common on modern and mid-century homes, and they absolutely can host solar, but they get handled differently than a pitched roof. Panels are usually set on tilted racks or ballasted mounts, and waterproofing becomes a central concern. A few things to check before you commit
Wherever your panels end up, a few practical items are worth confirming up front. If your roof is more than 15 or 20 years old, it’s usually smart to re-roof before installing, so you’re not paying to remove and reinstall panels later. Check whether an HOA has specific rules or requirements affecting panel placement. And on rural or wooded lots, factor in wildfire clearance and how tree management interacts with both your production and your defensible space. A shaded or wrong-facing roof isn’t the end of the road, it just means the best spot might be a different part of your roof, a ground mount out back, or a carport.
